With the recent enforcement of laws on noise pollution in places like Lagos, Nigeria. Silent Discos seem to be an interesting alternative to loud sound systems. In fact, Silent Discos presents an opportunity for several DJs to play simultaneously (via different channels) maybe in different genres to satisfy the different needs of the audience which would not have been possible in a loud central sound setup.
A silent disco, sometimes called a silent rave is an event where people dance to music from wireless headphones, rather than using a speaker system. Music is broadcast via a radio transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the participants. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a room full of people dancing to nothing. This sounds literally crazy if you have never attended one or you did not know it is a silent rave you are attending.
In the earliest days of silent discos, before 2005, there would be only one channel available to listen to music through. Over time, the technology moved along to where there were two, and later technology allowed for a third channel that three separate DJs could broadcast over at the same time.
Silent discos are popular at music festivals as they allow dancing to continue past noise curfews. Similar events are “mobile clubbing” gatherings, where a group of people dance to the music on their personal music players. The silent disco concept is not limited to raves, clubbing and parties alone, other uses include concerts, religious programs, silent theatres, gyms and so on. With the recent enforcement of laws on noise pollution in places like Lagos, this will be a good solution for nightclubs, religious centres, concerts and many more.
The silent disco concept was adopted by the Gidi Culture Festival in 2015 by Smirnoff Ice Double Black with Guarana and Noiseless Party by MTN Nigeria in 2016 . We look forward to more of such events in the near future.
